"When Korean media and Korean people in general talk about drag. "I see LGBTQ people, including drag, are more included on TV, K-pop music videos and some TV shows, but they are a very tiny part of the production," Yang said. The country's booming television industry has also featured gay characters in popular K-dramas and last year premiered an LGBTQ reality dating show.īut what's happening in mainstream media doesn't always reflect reality, Yang said, with same-sex marriage still illegal and discrimination based on sexual orientation still widespread and not officially banned. South Korea's K-pop scene has brought a whole host of highly groomed, makeup-wearing, jewellery-sporting male stars - not least the seven members of mega-group BTS - to the global stage. South Korea has to get "used to having us everywhere and seeing us everywhere", they said. "We are everywhere, so there should be LGBTQ events everywhere and we should be visible everywhere," Yang told AFP. Hurricane Kimchi, also known as activist and artist Heezy Yang, said South Korea needs to get used to the idea that LGBTQ people are part of society. Many evangelicals oppose gay rights, and few politicians are willing to challenge the religious lobby. Nearly a quarter of South Korea's population is Christian and around 40 percent of its lawmakers are Protestant, church figures show. ![]() Seoul authorities officially blamed a scheduling clash, but the city's conservative mayor Oh Se-hoon said in June he "personally can't agree with homosexuality".Ī similar event in the southern city of Daegu in June descended into police clashes after officials attempted to block Pride celebrations. ![]() This year's celebration, one of Asia's largest, was denied permission to use the capital's central plaza for the main event on Saturday, with a Christian group snagging the prime spot instead. Hurricane Kimchi told AFP when they first went to Seoul Pride more than a decade ago only a few hundred people were there.

9/1/2023 0 Comments Holocaust project title ideasHitler’s second book, “The Zweites Buch,” was written in 1928 and contained his thoughts on foreign policy. By 1940, it had sold some 6 million copies there. It sold modestly at first, but with Hitler’s rise it became Germany’s best-selling book after the Bible. Hitler would finish the second volume of "Mein Kampf" after his release, while relaxing in the mountain village of Berchtesgaden. In it, Hitler expanded on the nationalistic, anti-Semitic views he had begun to develop in Vienna in his early twenties, and laid out plans for the Germany-and the world-he sought to create when he came to power. During this period, he began to dictate the book that would become " Mein Kampf" (“My Struggle”), the first volume of which was published in 1925. Tried for treason, Hitler was sentenced to five years in prison, but would serve only nine months in the relative comfort of Landsberg Castle. Even though it failed spectacularly, the Beer Hall Putsch established Hitler as a national figure, and (in the eyes of many) a hero of right-wing nationalism. Hitler fled quickly, but he and other rebel leaders were later arrested. Wielding a revolver, Hitler proclaimed the beginning of a national revolution and led marchers to the center of Munich, where they got into a gun battle with police. On the evening of November 8, 1923, members of the SA and others forced their way into a large beer hall where another right-wing leader was addressing the crowd. Many dissatisfied former army officers in Munich would join the Nazis, notably Ernst Röhm, who recruited the “strong arm” squads-known as the Sturmabteilung (SA)-which Hitler used to protect party meetings and attack opponents. Printed in a white circle on a red background, Hitler’s swastika would take on terrifying symbolic power in the years to come.īy the end of 1921, Hitler led the growing Nazi Party, capitalizing on widespread discontent with the Weimar Republic and the punishing terms of the Versailles Treaty. In one of Hitler’s strokes of propaganda genius, the newly renamed National Socialist German Workers Party, or Nazi Party, adopted a version of the swastika-an ancient sacred symbol of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism-as its emblem. His skilled oratory and charismatic energy helped propel him in the party’s ranks, and in 1920 he left the army and took charge of its propaganda efforts. Like many Germans, Hitler came to believe the country’s devastating defeat could be attributed not to the Allies, but to insufficiently patriotic “traitors” at home-a myth that would undermine the post-war Weimar Republic and set the stage for Hitler’s rise.Īfter Hitler returned to Munich in late 1918, he joined the small German Workers’ Party, which aimed to unite the interests of the working class with a strong German nationalism. ![]() A month later, he was recuperating in a hospital at Pasewalk, northeast of Berlin, when news arrived of the armistice and Germany’s defeat in World War I. Hitler was wounded twice during the conflict: He was hit in the leg during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and temporarily blinded by a British gas attack near Ypres in 1918. When World War I broke out the following summer, he successfully petitioned the Bavarian king to be allowed to volunteer in a reserve infantry regiment.ĭeployed in October 1914 to Belgium, Hitler served throughout the Great War and won two decorations for bravery, including the rare Iron Cross First Class, which he wore to the end of his life. In 1913, Hitler moved to Munich, in the German state of Bavaria. 9/1/2023 0 Comments Diskwarrior catalinaGet the latest release of DiskWarrior 5 Mac Crack the essential Mac disk utility which is now available free download at 4Macsoft.Everything just disappeared after your Mac went haywire. 3) The updater will also update any installed copy of DiskWarrior 5.0 that is located in the Applications folder. The simple tenses ( past, present, and future) are the most basic forms, but there are 12 major verb tenses in English in all. We’ll review the tenses here. A separate word (or particle) is combined with the verb to explain when it occurred. In Chinese languages, for example, a verb doesn’t change its spelling depending on the tense. ( Walk becomes walks and walked.) In some cases, an auxiliary verb (also known as a helping verb, like will or need) is required as well. Interestingly, not all languages treat verb tenses the same way. In English, the ending on a verb communicates what tense it’s in. The verb walks communicates not only how many people completed the action (it’s singular), but also when it occurred. Generally speaking, verb tenses identify the time period when an action occurs. In the sentences the boy walks and the girl ran, the words walks and ran are the verbs.ĭid you also recognize that walks is in the present tense, or that ran is in the past tense? Whether you did or didn’t, we’re here to review verb tenses with you and also astound you with the fact that there are 12-count them, 12-verb tenses in all! Maybe just don't think about it too hard when you first wake up.If you’re familiar with basic English grammar, we bet you can describe a verb and perhaps name a tense or two. It helps if you remember that awaken and awake are different verbs, and that awakened is regular. The most common inflections of awaken continue to be awakened in the past ("he awakened") and awakened as the past participle ("she was awakened"). Current UsageĪt this point in time, our evidence shows that the most common inflections of awake are awoke in the simple past ("he awoke") and awoken as the past participle ("she was awoken"). It's no wonder we can't figure out how to get out of bed. Introduction of Awokenīut English speakers like consistency, and by the 16th century, we had introduced what was an initially poetic past participle of awake to match the past-tense awoke: awoken (as in "they were awoken"). So it's absolutely permissible to say "she awakened," (using awaken), "she awaked" (using one inflection of awake), and "she awoke" (using the other inflection of awake). The core verbs begin to blend together in Middle English, which means that there are now two possible past-tense forms to choose from: awaked and awoke. One of the regular inflections, awaken, gains life as its own verb and is given regular inflections ( awaken, awakened, awakened). The problem, however, is that one of those verbs had what we now consider to be regular inflections ( awake, awaked, awaken) and the other had what we now consider to be irregular inflections ( awake, awoke, awaken).įrom there, the inflectional history of awake becomes a mess. ![]() The two verbs have very similar infinitive forms, and so were beginning to affect one another by the Late Old English period. There were two verbs in Old English that meant "to rise from sleep": the intransitive awacan and the transitive awacian. The confusion starts back in the first millennium. Garner in his Garner's Modern English Usage says that awake and awaken are "perhaps the most vexing in the language." As Merriam-Webster's Concise Dictionary of English Usage notes, " awake is a verb that has not yet settled down from its long and tangled history." Everyone gets a pass for being confused. If these questions keep you awake at night, you're not alone. There were two verbs in Old English that meant "to rise from sleep," but one had regular inflections and the other irregular inflections. |
